Evinrude Outboard Motors
model to HP, year
code explanation
1913-1979
Recreational Outboard Motors
There is another list similar to this for Commercial Motors, starting as
small as 2.3hp and another for Racing Motors
This list is set up in alphabetical & then
numerical order AND in repeating vertical column order to the right.
It appears that the factory may have had a code system at a
couple of times, but it soon became so cluttered that it then became
meaningless. It also appears that there was some effort to incorporate HP as the first number
with the year as the second
in this model code after 1979. And a last number of 2 being a standard
shaft, with a 3 being longshaft.
You
may also see duplicate model numbers (like the 6002 & 6003) &
maybe for the same
hp of motors, but usually there are considerable number of years
difference in manufacture (like 30+) so identification is easier.
Just because a motor size or model ended
here in 1979 does not mean the model was discontinued, but possibly
carried on using the newer model numbering code system, in 1980 when the code word INTRODUCES was
implemented.
